The Chesapeake volleyball team opened the season on Sept. 11 with a home match against Western Tech, last year’s Class 1A state runner-up.
The Wolverines overwhelmed the rebuilding Bayhawks, winning 25-7, 25-16 and 25-9.
Western Tech was just too tall and too strong for Chesapeake, overpowering the Bayhawks at the net and with its serves,
Chesapeake was briefly competitive in the second set, tying the score at 5-5 and later trailing by only 12-11.
The Bayhawks hung close and were within 17-14 when Western Tech regained the serve with a spike and then ran off four straight points to open up a 22-14 lead.
Chesapeake twice regained the serve, but each time immediately gave it back with a service error. The Wolverines clinched the set on another Bayhawk error.
The Bayhawks took a 3-0 lead in the third game and were within 10-7 when the Wolverines went on a 10-0 run followed by a 5-0 run to clinch the match.
Chesapeake is at Parkville on Wednesday and at Sparrows Point on Friday before returning home on Sept. 25 to play Eastern Tech.
The Mavericks also opened with a tough opponent, getting swept by Baltimore County power Hereford on Sept. 11.
Eastern Tech’s next home match is on Sept. 26 against Lansdowne.
Kenwood swept host Woodlawn on Friday and was to host Patapsco on Wednesday and Dundalk on Friday this week.
