Sunday, April 28 is the day local country music fans have been waiting for – the release of Dean Crawford’s fifth CD, Backroads Lovin’. This free, all ages CD release party will be held at Cancun Cantina in Hanover from 2 to 5 p.m. and will include performances by Carlos Cubas and Jennifer Rose in addition to Crawford and his Dunn’s River Band.
Crawford has released four CDs to date and has sold more than 40,000 copies and downloads in Maryland and throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
A Jamaican-born singer/songwriter, Crawford moved to Baltimore in 1990 and quickly became a part of the music scene. After meeting bandmate Kenny Wise at a karaoke bar, they officially formed Dean Crawford and the Dunn’s River Band in 1996 and started playing gigs in the Essex and Dundalk areas. He has performed at multiple Essex Day Festivals and will be back on stage at the Dundalk Heritage Fair for his tenth year on June 30.
Crawford, currently the reigning Performer of the Year at the Maryland Music Awards, has written more than 500 songs and names fellow songwriter Dolly Parton as one of his idols. Crawford says that Parton is a big influence in his songwriting: “I’m very simplistic, very direct and to the point like her style is. I write about human feelings and relationships.”
Backroads Lovin’ has 18 songs and is a true traditional country album that his fans have been waiting for.
“Country music is losing its identity and I would like to do my part in keeping the traditional sounds alive,” said Crawford. “The new CD is strictly country music. It’s not bro country and pop country. It’s reminiscent of 1990s country music. It has steel guitar and it has fiddles and I am proud to have recorded a CD that true country fans will love.”
“I wanted to write a song about backroads living, but soon realized that I was writing an up-tempo love song so it changed from livin’ to lovin’,” he added. “The CD is all about love of family, country and romance.”
The new CD will be on sale at Cancun Cantina and will be made available online for download at a later date. Crawford would like to credit the producers who helped him make the CD possible: Troy Engle who toured with Patty Loveless; Chad Grey, a young up and coming musician and producer; and veteran Producer Garrick Alden with whom Crawford has worked for years.
“They each give me a different flavor, but it all worked together to create a great musical story of loving and losing, livin’ and lovin,’” said Crawford. “I believe this CD will quickly become a fan favorite.”
Dean Crawford and the Dunn’s River Band plays most every weekend a year throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Crawford credits his fans along with his great band for the many years of continued success.
“Our Deansters have sustained me and the band, and this is my tribute to all that love us. I also dedicate the CD to my family. We will never forget from where we came,” he said. “Come on out and join us to support local artists. I am excited to see everyone on April 28.”
