Ways to honor our fallen heroes this Memorial Day

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, many of the local Memorial Day Ceremonies have been cancelled or revised to reflect Governor Hogan’s Executive Order to limit outdoor gatherings to 10 people or less.

Please consider attending with your family one or more of these Memorial Day Ceremonies to honor those men and women who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. For everyone’s health and safety, please wear masks and practice social distancing at least six feet. Memorial Day Ceremonies were current at the time of going to press.

Note: Ceremonies are held Sunday and Monday rain or shine.

Sunday May 24 8:30 a.m.- Saint Clare Roman Catholic Church Veterans Memorial Mass, 714 Myrth Avenue, Essex. Cancelled.

Sunday May 24 11 a.m.- Catholic War Veterans Monument Wreath Laying Ceremony, 714 Myrth Avenue, Essex. Ceremony limited to ten people. R.S.V.P. by calling 443-847-5087.

• Sunday May 24 11a.m.- Parkville Memorial VFW Post 9083 Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Parkwood Cemetery, 3310 Taylor Avenue, Parkville. Pending.

• Sunday May 24 12 p.m.- Joint Veterans Association of Essex World War II Monument 72nd Anniversary Wreath Laying Ceremony, 525 Eastern Boulevard, Essex in front of Dollar General Store. Featuring various Honor Guard and Police Escort across Eastern Boulevard to continue ceremony. Cancelled.

• Sunday May 24 12:30 p.m.- Joint Veterans Association of Essex Korea-Vietnam Monument 34th Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony, 516 Eastern Boulevard, Essex next to The Heritage Society of Essex and Middle River. Featuring various Honor Guard, Rifle Fire Salute, and playing of Taps. Cancelled.

• Monday May 25 9 a.m.- Lamky Luther Whitehead Veterans Memorial Committee 31st Annual Memorial Day Program at Holly Hill Memorial Gardens, 10201 Bird River Road, Middle River. This will be held virtually. Procession; Patriotic Music; Laying of Roses and Tolling of the Bell as the names are read for those Killed in Action (KIA) from World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan; wreath laying ceremony; dedication of Honorably Served Veterans Monument; etc. Bring lawn chairs and bottled water. Pending.

· Monday May 25 10 a.m.- Annual Memorial Day Roman Catholic Mass at Sacred Heart of Mary Cemetery, 7501 German Hill Road, Dundalk. If raining, moved to Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, 6736 Youngstown Avenue, Dundalk. Cancelled.

· Monday May 25 10 a.m.- Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens Circle of Valor, 200 E. Padonia Road, Timonium. Guest Speaker Honorable George W. Owings, III, Secretary of Maryland Department of Veterans of Affairs, Featuring Honor Guard, Wreath Laying, Firing Party, Playing of Taps, Period Clothing and Vehicles. Cancelled.

· Monday May 25 11 a.m.- Annual Memorial Day Wreath Laying Ceremony Veterans Park at Shipping Place, Dundalk. Pending.

· Monday May 25 11 a.m.- Memorial Day Ceremony Essex American Legion Post 148, 20 South Marlyn Avenue, Essex. Pending.

· Monday May 25 11 a.m.- Memorial Day Ceremony Gunpowder VFW Post 10067, 6309 Ebenezer Road, Middle River. Pending.

· Monday May 25 11 a.m.- Independent Order of Odd Fellows North Point Lodge # 4 and Wells McComas VFW Post 2678 76th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Fort Howard Veterans Park, 9501 North Point Road, Fort Howard. Featuring the Maryland Army Band, Color Guard, Wreath Laying Ceremony, Tolling of the bell for Edgemere, Penwood, and Fort Howard World War II Service Members Killed in Action (KIA), Firing Party, and playing of Taps. This is a virtual ceremony which will be videotaped in advance and played on Facebook at 11AM.

· Monday May 25 11 a.m.- Rosedale American Legion Post 180 Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, 1331 Seling Avenue, Rosedale. Pending.

· Monday May 25 12 p.m. — Charles Evering VFW Post 6506, Annual Indoor Air Conditioned Memorial Day Ceremony in Big Hall, 8777 Philadelphia Road, Rossville. Cancelled.

· Monday May 25 12 p.m.- American Legion Post 38 Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, 3300 Dundalk Avenue, Dundalk. Pending.

· Monday May 25 12 p.m. — Essex-Holly Neck Memorial VFW Post 2621, Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, 206 Riverside Road (off Mace Avenue), Essex. Honor Guard, Wreath Laying Ceremony, and playing of Taps.
