After falling to Harcum College on the road on Jan. 17, the CCBC-Essex women’s basketball has recorded its first defeat of the season. The Knights are now 17-1 overall.
After opening the second half of the regular season with two dominant wins, the CCBC-Essex women’s basketball team lost to nationally ranked opponent Harcum College on Jan. 17.
Heading into the fourth quarter, the score was 51-47 in favor of HC. The Bears went on to outscore the Knights 21-13 in the final 10-minute frame and were fueled by the nation’s top scorer to come out on top.
The last time the two squared off was in CCBC-Essex’s home opener on Nov. 9 and the outcome was vastly different as the Knights annihilated the Bears, 110-59.
The Knights fall to 17-1 with the loss, which snaps a 53-game regular season win streak. The last time CCBC-Essex dropped a game in the regular season was on Dec. 14, 2019, against Niagara County Community College.
Harcum College, ranked No. 14 in the nation, is led by Amaris Baker, who leads all JUCO Division II scorers in the country with 28.2 points per game. Baker’s prolific scoring ability was on display Tuesday night as she finished with a team-high 29 points that included 6-of-10 shooting from the 3-point line.
Head Coach Mike Seney said his team hasn’t played up to expectations since their return from the holiday tournament in Illinois at the end of 2022, adding that the loss was well-deserved.
“Deserved the [butt] whipping we got tonight,” Seney said after the road loss. “Haven’t played well since we got back from Illinois.. today was the perfect storm.”
After a steal and a layup by Heather Middleton at the 6:35 mark in the fourth, CCBC-Essex trimmed the deficit to 54-52.
The Knights struggled to find the hoop in the games most crucial moments as HC extended its lead down the stretch. CCBC-Essex was held scoreless for the next four minutes before Anasia Staton knocked down three free throws near the two-minute mark to trim Harcum’s lead to 58-55.
HC responded with a triple and a putback layup made it a three-possession game with about 1:30 left in regulation. The Knights were unable to put together a rally to even the score or take the lead and were forced to foul in the final minute as Harcum College nailed late-game free throws to clinch one of the most notable wins in program history.
Heather Middleton scored 20 and Anasia Staton recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds to power CCBC-Essex to a 94-64 comeback win at CCBC-Catonsville on Jan. 11.
The Knights then hosted WVU Potomac State College on Jan. 14, which resulted in a dominant 100-47 victory after Faith Blackstone led the way with 30 points and nine rebounds. Daqira Lancaster netted 17 points and pulled down 10 boards while Cassandra Hawthorne also registered a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Staton poured in 14 points and Tiffany Hammond added 13 for the Knights.
CCBC-Essex doesn’t have long to rebound from the loss as the club travels to face Monroe College in New Rochelle, N.Y., on Jan. 19 before returning to the Athletics and Wellness Center to square off against Monroe College — Bronx on Jan. 21 at 2 p.m.
