After falling to Harcum College on the road on Jan. 17, the CCBC-Essex women’s basketball has recorded its first defeat of the season. The Knights are now 17-1 overall.
The CCBC-Essex women’s basketball team’s latest matchup — a home game against Prince George’s Community College — resulted in yet another lopsided victory.
A balanced offensive effort led to seven Knights scoring in double figures with freshman guard Ashley Dickey leading the way with 18 points while Faith Blackstone netted 17 points and five rebounds to power CCBC-Essex to a 113-52 win at the school’s Wellness and Athletics Center on Dec. 10
The Knights remain unbeaten, improving to 10-0 on the year. All of the team’s wins have come by double digits. The victory is Head Coach Mike Seney’s 115th consecutive Maryland JUCO conference win, dating back to when he coached at Harford Community College.
“When I looked at the stat sheet, I think I had seven kids in double figures. As a coach, what more could you ask for?” Seney said.
“We definitely shared the ball really well, and that’s our plan every single day – to come out and do that. We’ll live with the results if that happens.”
After tipoff, CCBC-Essex didn’t waste any time, building a 36-12 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Knights applied a suffocating full-court defense that created turnovers and easy transition points as they were on top, 69-26, at intermission.
The defensive intensity continued in the second half and the Knights never let up on the offensive end, using every opportunity to score as many points as possible. CCBC-Essex, now ranked No. 3 in the nation among D-II JUCOs, has scored 100 or more points in four of its 10 contests.
“Today was just great energy,” said Tiffany Hammond, who finished the afternoon with 14 points and four steals.
“We kind of came out in the first quarter looking to get steals and pressed them, and that energy and effort translated to a win. And it carried us through the whole game.”
CCBC-Essex is about a third of the way through the regular season and appears to be gelling at the right time. This matchup, along with CCBC-Essex’s next road contest at Raritan Valley Community College (N.J.) will serve as tune-ups for the upcoming holiday tournament at the end of the month where the Knights will likely face stiffer competition.
“Our confidence is obviously coming along, it’s growing. We’re all kind of gelling together,” Hammond said.
“Coach Mike talks a lot about having a feel for the game, and we’re all starting to have a better feel for each other, and having momentum and keeping each other going.”
Along with Dickey, Cassandra Hawthorne came off the bench and had a double-digit scoring day, netting 10 points and seven rebounds. Anasia Station registered 11 points and 11 boards, while Tyler Gray and Alexandra Wilkinson scored 12 apiece.
The Knights outrebounded the Owls, 60-30, while forcing 27 turnovers that led to 38 easy breakaway points.
PGCC, led by Coach Devin May, was a conference opponent for CCBC-Essex though it is a Division III program. The Owls were led by guard Vanessa Schwarzmann with a game-high 19 points and are now 8-2 overall with the loss.
Next, the Knights will head to Branchburg, N.J., for a faceoff against non-conference opponent Raritan Valley Community College on Dec. 17 at 1 p.m.
