The CCBC-Essex women’s basketball team is still unbeaten, picking up its latest win after another balanced offensive showing resulted in a 94-32 rout of Raritan Valley Community College (N.J.) on Dec. 17.
Sierra Smith scored a season-high 15 points off the bench to lead the way for the Knights. Faith Blackstone scored 14 to go with eight boards and four steals while Anasia Staton recorded her sixth double-double this season, finishing with 13 points and 14 rebounds to contribute to the Knight’s big road win.
CCBC-Essex (11-0, 3-0 Maryland JUCO) sprinted out to a 19-0 lead about five-and-a-half minutes into the first quarter, indicating how the rest of the afternoon would go. The No. 3-ranked Knights led 25-4 after the first and were ahead 41-16 at halftime.
The Knights held RVCC to single-digit scoring quarters in the third and the fourth en route to the easy win.
Cassandra Hawthorne poured in 13 points and six rebounds for CCBC-Essex and Daqira Lancaster had 10 points and eight boards. Ashley Dickey was key on the defensive end with five steals and Tyler Gray led all players with six assists. CCBC-Essex dominated the rebounding battle 64-48, holding its opponent to 17.9 percent shooting from the field.
The Golden Lions fall to 6-9 overall with the loss and were led by freshman guard Antonia Polvere with 12 points.
The Knights return to action on the evening of Dec. 21 at Harford Community College in Bel Air, then will have a one-week break to gear up for a holiday tournament in Illinois.
They will square off against Bryant and Stratton College (Wisc.), ranked No. 13 in the nation, on Dec. 28 before facing two other opponents on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30, which have not been announced yet.
