After handily defeating Garrett College, 78-55, at home on Feb. 25, the CCBC-Essex women’s basketball team has stretched their winning streak to 10 and will try to carry the momentum into their two final contests in preparation for the soon-approaching postseason.
Anasia Staton recorded 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Knights past Garrett College, a conference opponent. Ashley Dickey started and finished with 10 points and six steals while Cassandra Hawthorne came off the bench and poured in 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting to go with nine rebounds.
With the win, CCBC-Essex improves to 27-1 and 12-0 in Maryland JUCO conference play.
Prior to the home win over Garrett College, CCBC-Essex sailed to road wins over the Allegany College of Maryland, 83-45, on Feb. 22, and Montgomery College, 96-59, on Feb. 18.
Standout guard Faith Blackstone registered an efficient 22 points and 11 rebounds to guide the Knights to the win over Allegany College. In the victory over Montgomery College, Staton scored 22 and Tiffany Hammond added 18 points and five steals.
The 37-point win at Montgomery College marked one of CCBC-Essex’s strongest offensive outings this season. As a team, the Knights shot nearly 50 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from behind the arc.
The Knights will play their last home game of the regular season against conference opponent College of Southern Maryland at the CCBC-Essex Wellness and Athletics Center on March 1 at 7 p.m. Their regular-season finale will be at {Rosemont College on March 3 at 7 p.m.
CCBC-Essex LAX prepares for season opener, baseball off to 2-0 start
The CCBC-Essex men’s lacrosse team will commence their 2023 campaign against Genesee Community College at home on March 5 at noon.
The Knights will be coming off a two-week break as their final exhibition match was on Feb. 18 against Lawrenceville Prep. Last year, the lacrosse team finished 8-5 overall with a season-ending loss, 16-8, in the national tournament semifinals to Howard Community College.
The CCBC-Essex baseball team is now 2-0 after picking up wins at the Combine Academy in Charlotte, N.C., on Feb. 28.
The Knights will head to Raleigh, N.C. on March 1 for another double-header at the Pro 5 Baseball Academy.
