Investigators have determined that a fatal shooting on the parking lot of the Golden Ring Shopping Center last week occurred as a result of an attempted robbery during an online selling transaction.

Officers responded to the call for a shooting in the parking lot near the Walmart and Sam's Club in the 6400 block of Petrie Way at 5:23 p.m. There they located an adult man suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body.

The man, identified as Kumar Jumar Burney, 20, of the 5300 block of King Arthur Circle, was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

Burney reportedly arranged to purchase an expensive pair of shoes from the seller on a popular selling app. The two met on the parking lot in the 6400 block of Petrie Way on Sunday evening.

During the transaction Burney allegedly attempted to rob the seller, at which point the seller reportedly produced a handgun and shot Burney once in the upper body, then called 9-1-1 and remained at the scene.

Responding officers located Burney lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound, and recovered a loaded handgun from him before he was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Investigators interviewed and released the seller, who is cooperating with the police investigation. Once detectives from the Baltimore County Police Homicide Unit have concluded their investigation the case will be reviewed by the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Consumers are reminded that in-person sales transactions with strangers are potentially dangerous situations, for both buyers and sellers.

Anyone choosing to engage in these transactions is encouraged to meet during daylight hours at any of the Baltimore County Police Safe Exchange Zones for the completion of the transaction.
