A small tornado touched down in North Point State Park and traveled up to Essex last Wednesday, the National Weather Service confirmed the next day.

The NWS confirmed on Friday that an EF-0 tornado had torn through at the coast of North Point State Park, where a path of hardwood tree trunks had snapped between 2:48 and 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

EF-0 is the lowest tornado rating, on a scale of EF-0 to EF-5.

The tornado then passed through Back River and snapped some branches in Essex, according to the NWS.

The NWS determined that a tornado did touch down due to downed trees, rather than spotting the twister or residential destruction.

“We usually have a team that goes down there, we survey what type of damage occurred,” Austin Mannsfield, a meteorologist with the NWS, said. “Typically it’s based off of a single-family home, but if we don’t see any damage like that, then we go to things like tree damage.”

Peak winds from the tornado were estimated at about 85 mph, and it traveled about 6.7 miles, according to the NWS.

Nobody was injured by the twister, which came in a flurry of storms that passed through on Wednesday, remnants of Hurricane Ida, which struck Louisiana earlier in the week before weakening and causing significant storms and a tornado outbreak in the northeast.

An EF-2 tornado was confirmed earlier on Wednesday in Annapolis and Edgewater, causing significant damage there. Another EF-0 tornado was confirmed in Hurlock on the Eastern Shore.

The storm also shut down the Sollers Point Library for a period of time due to flooding.
