ESSEX — David Marvin Haas, 31, of Essex, was sentenced in Baltimore County Circuit Court on Oct. 18 to life in prison for child abuse resulting in the death of a 2-year-old child, according to a press release. He was found guilty by a jury earlier this year.

On June 29, 2019, emergency personnel were called to an apartment on Garden Drive in Essex for an unresponsive child. Baltimore County police and emergency medical technicians in the Baltimore County Fire Department found an unresponsive 2-year-old boy. EMTs were unable to revive the child, and it became apparent that the child had been deceased for a period of time before they had arrived.

An autopsy documented multiple bruises and abrasions on the child’s body, and revealed evidence of blunt-force trauma to the child’s abdomen, which caused a tear to the bowel and the pancreas to tear in half.

The medical examiner ruled that the cause of death was homicide. The investigation by Baltimore County police found that Haas was the person responsible for care of the child at the time of his death.

Haas told a version of the facts that was “significantly inconsistent” with the child’s injuries, the press release stated. He claimed that the child had drowned in a bathtub when he had stepped away to check on another child in the home. Haas was the boyfriend of the mother of the child.
