ESSEX — Week of Oct. 3 to Oct. 9

Chesapeake High School

Conference: 0-2

Overall: 2-3

Last week’s results: Chesapeake 28, Eastern Tech 6

Top players of the week:

Patrick Byers — Three touchdowns: two receiving and one punt return. He had three touchdowns called back, including a pick six.

Marquis Burgess — One receiving touchdown. He was defensive captain, leading the defense, which only allowed six points and forced four turnovers.

Jaylin Willis — One interception and 10 tackles.

Shawn Barners — Five tackles and one interception.

Coach Chris Acab’s comments: Initially, I thought we started the game a little flat and came out a little sloppy. But I appreciated how hard the guys played and how they fought through the adversity.

Offensively, I wasn’t pleased with the sloppy turnovers in the first half that put our defense in compromising situations. But, overall, I thought our offense played the best it had all season. We had several explosive plays and were able to overcome multiple touchdowns that were called back.

Defensively, I thought we bounced back after a sloppy first drive. We adjusted and pretty much shut their offense down. We forced a total of four turnovers led by Seniors No. 3 Marquis Burgess (team captain), No. 11 Shawn Barnes, No. 4 Laron Talley, and sophomore No. 13 Jaylin Willis.

We play a tough Sparrows Point team this upcoming Friday. We’re looking forward to the opportunity.

Schedule: Chesapeake at Sparrows Point at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15.

Eastern Technical High School

Conference: 0-2

Overall: 0-6

Last week’s results: Chesapeake 28, Eastern Tech 6

Top players of the week: Senior linebacker Keith Morgan and senior cornerback Danny McCarthy each recorded interceptions for the Eastern Tech Mavericks in the first half. Junior running back Drew Raynor scored his fourth touchdown of the season for the Mavericks’ lone score.

Coach Bill Brinegar’s comments: Trailing 12-6 coming out of halftime, we held the ball for much of the third quarter, but penalties once again forced us to punt. A bad punt resulted in a return for a touchdown and sealed the victory for Chesapeake. We had the ball inside the Chesapeake 30-yard line on four occasions yet were unable to come away with any points.

Schedule: Eastern Tech hosts Landsdowne at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15.

Kenwood High School

Conference: 1-0

Overall: 3-3

Last week’s results: Kenwood 46, Randallstown 0

Top players of the week:

Senior Troy Dukes — 10 carries, 146 yards, three touchdowns, one 2-point conversion, and one interception on defense. He is currently No. 1 in Baltimore County and No. 8 in the state in rushing yards with 770. He also has 11 touchdowns this season.

Coach Derrick Krumholtz’s comments: The defense led the way Friday night, allowing no points and only five first downs the entire game. Offensively, the line deserves all the credit, as Dukes went for 146 yards on only 10 carries, and senior Randy Hughes, senior Shawn Miller, junior Khyree Myles and sophomore Alex Lee all had more than 50 rushing yards. Myles and Hughes both scored rushing touchdowns, and Myles also passed for one touchdown to Hughes. Sophomores Alex Lee and Tyler Green each accounted for a 2-point conversion.

Schedule: Kenwood at Overlea at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15.
