The Essex Co-Op Apartments, located at 1000 Franklin Ave. at the Middlesex Shopping Center, celebrated its 30th. Anniversary, on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

The celebration dinner was attended by 140 residents, five CSI Support and Staff Members, (CSI-Cooperative Services Incorporated) and Mr. and Mrs. Norman Lauenstein.

Norman Lauenstein was instrumental in bringing the cooperative way of life to this area, and his foresight, dedication, and commitment, was influential in bringing the building to fruition, according to a release.

The 12-story building has 209 apartments and serves a portion of the senior population in this area. Its location near the shopping center makes it very convenient for residents/members. The building is an outstanding example of people helping people as they live cooperatively in a safe, clean, friendly, and secure environment, the release stated.

Bob Snyder, the building president, served as master of ceremonies at the dinner and many building residents were involved in the planning, entertainment, and decorating for the event.

Norman Lauenstein was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation. Cheryl Ross, the Maryland Regional Manager of CSI, was also presented with a certificate, thanking the staff for their work over the last 30 years in support of the cooperative.

Norman Lauenstein spoke of the difficulties in getting the building approved and built. He talked about how the area residents were against it and how hard fought the process was to get the building completed. Cheryl Ross spoke of how special cooperative living is, how the residents are the managers of the building, and the democratic process that is used for decisions that affect the residents and the operation of the building.

Bob Snyder spoke of how volunteerism of the residents/members helps to make the cooperative way of life so successful and how the sharing of the gifts and talents of members enhances the lives of everyone who lives at the Essex Co-Op. He reflected on those, past and present, who have helped make the building home.

Valentino's Restaurant catered the meal.
